Jam Bands And Fans

My wife and I went to the 2009 Wu Year's Eve at Trocaderos in Minneapolis, MN.

First the worst and best parts of the night.

The worst part of the night was the line to get in. It was right around 0 degrees and yet everyone had to wait in a 45 minute line to get in. It was terrible.

Everyone had the same reaction as they went to the front of the line with their tickets only to find out that most people in line also already had tickets. This caused great dispair as everyone then had to get in line and endure a very cold 45 minutes to get in.

The best part of the night was sitting in the VIP section. When we finally got into the show, I told my wife that we should go upstairs because it would be warmer. We walked upstairs and into the balcony area to find nice couches and a lot of room to stand and look over the stage and the very packed crowd below.

There were names on the tables and everyone was wearing bright blue wristbands. We quickly figured out we were in the VIP area. We saw that there was now a very large bouncer at the top of the stairs who must have stepped away just as we came up the stairs. There was a bar and bathrooms upstairs so we had no need to go back downstairs. We both had on long sleeve shirts so we had no problem enjoying the VIP section the rest of the night.

We got into the show just as God Johnson was finishing their set. They sounded good and it looked like Jason Fladager was having fun. We had watched him play as part of The Big Wu for many years until he decided to get off the touring circuit and play in a local Minneapolis band.

As expected, Jason then played the rest of the night with The Big Wu.

After a New Years countdown (with a free champaign toast in the VIP section) The Big Wu started with Two Person Chair. The song is a popular upbeat song written by Jason and rarely performed once he left the band.

After another rocking song, the crowd was really into it and wanting more. The mood was then killed by a slower song. This was followed by some guest performers on another lackluster song selection.

I'm not sure who decided on what songs to play, but I think most of us wanted to start out 2009 with a bunch of upbeat jammy songs. That is why most people waited in the cold for 45 minutes to get in.

The vibe started to pick up again with a good version of Pinnacle and a decent version of Red Sky, but the momentum had been lost as people started to trickle out the door.

When Andy (the bass player) got up to talk to the crowd, we figured that was our usual cue to take our leave. The bartender told us the club would close soon and we figured we would leave a little early to beat the rush out the door and out of the parking structure.

Overall, we're glad we went. We saw the Wu play many times at the Cabooze during their peak and also many times at the Barrymore and Memorial Union Terrace in Madison, WI. The show brought back many good memories and it was nice to watch Jason play guitar again.
